1. Borrow a Ring They Already Wear

If your partner wears rings regularly, borrow one they wear on their ring finger – ideally the left hand. Take it to a jeweller for a professional sizing, or use a ring sizer tool or printable guide at home.

Pro tip: Can’t take the ring out of the house? Press it into a bar of soap or clay to make an impression, or trace the inner and outer edge onto paper.

2. Try the Paper Trick While They Sleep

For deep sleepers, you can gently wrap a thin strip of paper or string around their ring finger while they sleep. Mark where it overlaps, measure it with a ruler, and compare the length to a ring size chart.

This works best if you’re confident and they don’t wake easily.

3. Photograph or Trace One of Their Rings

If borrowing a ring isn’t an option, take a photo of it next to a coin or ruler to scale. Or, trace the inside edge onto paper when they’re not around.

Bring your photo or sketch into a showroom – or use it to compare against our online sizing tools.

4. Ask Their Family or Friends (Discreetly)

A close friend or sibling may already know – or could ask naturally in conversation without raising suspicion. Just make sure it’s someone who can keep a secret!

5. Take Your Best Guess – Then Resize Later

If you’re really stuck, don’t worry. Most people wear a size L, M, or N (UK sizing), so guessing within that range is a good start.

At Fraser Hart, we offer resizing on most engagement rings, so you’ll never be stuck with the wrong fit.

Bonus: Use the Rings They Do Wear

If your partner wears rings on their middle or index finger, take note. A skilled jeweller can estimate the right size for the ring finger based on that info – and even adjust slightly for left or right hand differences.
