GRAND SEIKO FAQs

Grand Seiko was born in 1960, from Seiko’s determination to create high precision watches with quality that could compete on the world stage. The first Grand Seiko Watch, powered by the 3810 calibre, was Japan’s first chronometer grade wrist watch. Throughout the 1960s, iconic pieces followed such as the Grand Seiko Self-Date and iconic 44GS alongside the establishment of The Grand Seiko standard in 1966.
In the decades that followed, Grand Seiko continued to innovate with high beat mechanical movements and world-class quartz calibres, alongside introducing the revolutionary Spring Drive technology, a hybrid movement combining the self-contained power of a traditional mechanical mainspring with the quartz crystal regulator precision.
In 2017, Grand Seiko became independent from Seiko and began a new chapter in its history, signified by the “Grand Seiko” logo introduced at the 12 o’ clock position on the dial.

Spring Drive uses a traditional mainspring like a mechanical watch, but it regulates time with an electronic “glide wheel” system for very high accuracy and that signature smooth sweeping seconds hand.

Zaratsu is Grand Seiko’s signature case-finishing method used to create a distortion-free, mirror-like surface with razor-sharp edges. It’s done by polishing the metal against a rotating flat disc, with the craftsperson controlling angle and pressure by hand — difficult to master, but it’s what gives Grand Seiko that ultra-clean, reflective finish.

Grand Seiko watches are made in Japan, primarily across two key studios: Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi (Iwate Prefecture) — focused on mechanical (9S) watchmaking.
Shinshu Watch Studio (Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture) — associated with Spring Drive (9R) and Quartz (9F) production.
