How do I maintain my watch

To maintain your watch you need to carry out regular cleaning and be mindful of exposing it to extreme temperatures, moisture and chemicals. Your watch would also benefit from a regular service from a professional to ensure proper functioning. If you’re unsure on how often a watch should be serviced, then we would recommend a professional service every 2-3 years. You should also ensure you’re storing your watch correctly when not wearing it. The best place to store it is in a cool, dry place and away from magnetic fields, ideally in its original box.

Do watches need to be cleaned?

Yes, watches should be cleaned regularly to keep their shiny appearance and ensure proper functioning. Dust, dirt, and sweat can collect on the watch and within its intricate mechanisms, potentially affecting its performance and aesthetics over time. Proper cleaning helps prevent corrosion, keeps the watch looking its best, and ensures accurate timekeeping. Regular maintenance by a professional also allows watchmakers to identify any issues early on, preventing more serious problems down the line.

How often should a watch be cleaned?

For watches that are worn every day, we suggest cleaning them once a week. However, for watches that are worn less often, we would suggest cleaning them once a month. Regular cleaning is vital to keep them in pristine condition and maintain their performance.

How to clean a watch bracelet

1.    Start by wiping your watch gently with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any surface dirt and smudges.

2.    We only recommend use of water if you can detach the bracelet from the watch itself. Use a soft toothbrush or cloth with some soapy water to gently clean and remove any dirt. Be careful not to get any water into the inner mechanics if your watch is not water-resistant.

3.    Rinse the watch with clean water to reduce any soap residue.

4.    Pat dry with a soft cloth and buff to enhance its shine.

5.    Ensure the watch is completely dry before wearing or storing again

You should follow the above steps if you’re planning on cleaning your watch at home. We recommend using our professional watch cleaning service to be confident of a thorough clean. If you’re cleaning your watch yourself, be mindful that certain types of bracelets, such as leather straps, require different cleaning methods.

One of the most common causes of watch problems is when moisture gets inside your watch case, so you should ensure that when cleaning the exterior areas of your watch should, it should be done on a dry work surface with clean, soft cloths used. Fraser Hart offer a range of cleaning cloths and solutions; come into store and speak to one of our consultants for information.

Cleaning a leather watch strap will require different products due to its material properties. To prevent the leather drying out or cracking, use a leather conditioner to keep the strap moisturised and soft. Avoid applying excessive water or soaking the strap as this can damage the leather. After cleaning, allow the strap to air dry away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

How to clean a stainless-steel watch

As well as following our key steps to cleaning a watch, if your stainless-steel watch has stubborn stains or grime, using a mixture of baking soda and water can be an effective way to quickly remove marks. Begin by creating a paste-like mixture and gently rub the area with a soft cloth. Make sure you steer away from using hard brushes that may scratch the metal or using an abrasive cleaning solution.

Cleaning a metal watch strap follows the same process we went through above. First remove the strap from the watch if you can do so. Use a soft cloth to remove any dust and dirt and then use warm soapy water with a soft toothbrush or cloth to gently scrub the strap. Rinse with clean water to ensure all soap residue is removed and then dry with a clean cloth.
