It takes its inspiration from the surrounding craggy moss-covered terrains of Silfra in Iceland, between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which continue to drift further apart each year. Silfra remains the only place in the world where divers can explore the fissure between two continents -the water is filtered through lava over the course of 100 years, making it the clearest water in the world –whilst adventurers explore the challenging terrain.This ‘Tortoise’ Automatic watch takes its name from its cushion shaped case, which resembles the shell like profile of a Tortoise as named by fans. The case is made from stainless steel and measures 42.4mm in diameter. On top of the case there is a striking green and charcoal accented bi-directional rotating bezel, which displays the four cardinal directions (N, E, S and W) which when used correctly provide navigational bearings for adventures. The bezel sides are coin edged, which allows for greater grip and therefore more easily rotated. On the side of the case there is a recessed screw-down crown at 4 o’clock. This is a feature which is commonly found on dive watches, as it allows the watch to sit comfortably on the wrist without the crown becoming uncomfortable. A sapphire crystal glass provides the watch with superlative levels of protection against scratches and shattering and has an anti-reflective coating. The case and bracelet of the watch are made from highly durable stainless steel with a fine ‘hairline’ brushed finish on the upper case, while the bottom of the case and the sides are beautifully highly polished to a mirror finish. The case is sealed to meet 200m water resistance.Renowned for its performance and reliability, Seiko’s inhouse 4R35 automatic movement powers the watch and it is an automatic calibre with manual-winding ability, convenient hacking-seconds function and quick date change. With a 41-hour power reserve and 24 jewels, it beats at 21,600vph and has both a good level of anti-shock and anti-magnetic protection for peace of mind.The dial was inspired by the texture and colours in Silfra and has a fine granular almost rock like appearance, indexes feature ‘heritage’ colour Lumibrite and provide improved night visibility.
