  1. Tell us about yourself. How did you become a stylist?

I was always interested in fashion from a young age and my mother says that from about 3 years old I was not only deciding on my own outfits but also for others. After a fantastic childhood in beautiful Anglesey it was time to choose a degree and ultimately a career path, which was always going to be Fashion. I studied Fashion Design with Technology at Manchester University and the course gave me an fantastic opportunity to embrace my creative side in ways I would have not imagined.

After producing a final collection that was very indicative of my colourful style at the time I knew that styling was in my blood. After graduating with a First Class Honours I worked freelance as a Personal Stylist.

My sister would tell you that I was never destined to work for anyone and I soon had the yearning to be my own boss. Coming from an academic and fashion background meant that I could combine these two and have the confidence to go ahead and start a business.

It’s nearly twelve years since we started the company and it has grown to be one of the largest Personal Styling companies in the UK employing makeup artists, colourists, personal shoppers and personal stylists across the country.

  1. What’s the most amazing thing that’s happened to you because of your career?

I'd say that every experience you have as a stylist is pretty amazing. The emails I've received from people over the years telling me how I've changed their life, helped them find love and generally made them feel amazing are all special. I've been on TV many times, seen lots of catwalk shows and met celebrities but changing the lives of 'real' people is really something I love. Being flown to Geneva to do a wardrobe edit was actually pretty cool though!

  1. Describe a typical day at work for you?

Great question as no day is typical and that's what I love about it. I'm not a routine person at all. I don't get up at the same time everyday or even go to the same place. I always try to catch up with emails before I leave the house and check social media. I can then be shopping with a client from anywhere from 2 to 8 hours. Sometimes I may be doing a wardrobe edit. My clients are male and female of all ages. As you can imagine I can't look at my phone when I'm with a client therefore nights are generally spent catching up with emails. Some days I may have back to back meetings and some day we may have style events for Style Doctors. I've also just started a new business training stylists called Style My which takes up a lot of my time too (for more information, visit http://stylemy.co.uk). Another day, I might be doing online style consultations for clients abroad. So, as you can see no day is ever the same.

  1. How would you describe your personal style?

Eclectic. I consciously try to wear different things from one day to the next. If I'm androgynous one day, I'll be super girly the next. I mix up my colours as much as possible too. These things help me utilise all of my wardrobe. And I ALWAYS have my outfit ready the night before (accessories et al). This makes sure I've fully styled the outfit and that it's not rushed. I always tell my clients to do this as well.

  1. What’s your personal jewellery style?

Big and bold! I adore jewellery and I do think that people can have too many clothes but not too many accessories. I have a large selection and I really do try to rotate but like everyone I have favourites.

  1. What three pieces of jewellery or clothing could you not live without?

Three? You can't ask a stylist that! I have no attachment to any of my clothes which some people find odd but as I know where to locate any item I could easily replace everything. Saying that…I'm a lover of faux fur scarves. My Instagram his filled with pictures of me and my scarves. They're a great way to add some colour, edge and texture to an outfit (they're so cosy too!). Ankle boots are something I tend to wear for most of the year too as these can be worn with everything. Can I choose all my accessories? If not, an origami necklace that's been dipped in gold that was custom made for me.

  1. How do you choose the looks for your individual clients?

When I see a  new client I will have received an in depth questionnaire about them first that they have filled in. I then have a chat with them over the phone where I'll ask some more questions. The most important thing about dressing someone is being able to understand them. What makes them happy, what's their lifestyle, how they feel about certain parts of their body, what they like and dislike. It's very important that you get into the mind of the client and see what will be perfect for them. Not every size 12 woman will want the same wardrobe. In fact, I treat every single client I ever see completely different. Once you feel like you've understood 'them' I then create a shopping list . This can be really vast sometimes but that's my job to curate the perfect wardrobe for people. It's my job to ensure that everything they buy is multi-use, fits them perfectly and makes them feel good. I teach people where to shop, how to shop, how to dress for their bodyshape, their colouring and much more.

A personal styling session is just that. Personal. It's about the individual and helping them feel  good through their clothes.
